Phil Zimmermann, a computer scientist, created Pretty Good Privacy (PGP) which can be easily downloaded and used by the public to secure their information. As a result, Zimmermann was under criminal investigation by the United States Customs Service because his software allowed anyone to encrypt tamper-proof information. With the creation of PGP, the crypto dilemma persists. In today's information world, cryptography has become more important than ever. The reason Zimmermann created PGP was because he believed in freedom of information and privacy. He believed that everyone should be able to communicate without being bugged or monitored. As a general citizen, I also believe that I should have the right to privacy and information. If the government thinks PGP is compromising state security, it should come up with a different strategy and technology that would help it monitor criminal activities.
