Drake was actually the first to sail around the world since Magellan died during his voyage. Drake was a "sea dog" during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. And as everyone knows, it's a good time to be a sea dog because the Queen has strongly supported them. She gave him money and ships to attack Spanish shipping. Drake was the most feared sea dog of his time. He didn't have a very exciting life when he was younger, but he grew up sailing on short voyages around the English coast.
