    #6Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce or respond to insulin. Insulin is a hormone. When the body is unable to produce enough insulin or respond to insulin, it results in abnormal carbohydrate metabolism and high glucose levels in the system. Insulin is needed to convert sugar and carbohydrates into energy. There are two main types of diabetes, type 1, where the onset is usually in children, is known as juvenile diabetes. In type 1 diabetes, the body does not make insulin (American Diabetes Association, n.d.). The second type of diabetes is type 2, which usually appears in adults. A third type of diabetes is gestational diabetes, which occurs in pregnant women usually around the 24th week. In most cases, diabetes symptoms will be relieved after birth. There are several comorbidities associated with diabetes, such as kidney failure, glaucoma and other eye diseases, neuropathy, stroke, and high blood pressure. Diabetes is considered a costly disease due to the comorbidities associated with it. In the United States, there are more than 25 million diabetics, or more than 8% of the population, but within the Asian Indian population, estimates of type 2 diabetes are between 17 and 29%. As additional information, according to the New York Times article, The Global Diabetes Epidemic, diabetes is reaching epidemic proportions in India, China and other emerging economies. Indians are predisposed to diabetes, especially if they are overweight (Lipska, 2015). Another risk for Indian-Americans is that much of the food consists of carbohydrates, as many Hindu Indians are vegetarians.
