Essay / Benefits of Marriage - 1162
Today, fewer and fewer people are getting married. Maybe they do this because they don't realize the benefits of marriage. Being married greatly benefits the emotional, physical and financial aspects of children, spouse and one's own life. Although viewed differently, the reasons for marriage can actually be narrowed down to two, marrying for love or marrying for a more personal and beneficial reason. The emotional aspects of marriage play an important role in any person's life. Although common sense is not always common, it affirms that the best relationships are born from a great depth of love. There is a recipe for a loving and lasting marriage. “First, they must love each other deeply and choose themselves without being influenced by external pressure. From then on, everyone must make the partner the absolute priority in life, placing this relationship above all competing ties. We believe that a husband and wife have the highest obligations and deepest loyalty to each other and to the children they raise. Parents and in-laws should not be allowed to interfere in the marriage. Married couples should be the best of friends, sharing their most intimate feelings and secrets. They should express their affection openly, but also talk frankly about their problems. And of course, they must be sexually faithful to each other” (coontz, 381). This recipe does not only apply to heterosexual couples but also extends to homosexuals if the right to marriage is granted to them. As Andrew Sullivan says in For Gay Marriage, homosexuals “exist and have emotional and sexual attractions to the same sex that heterosexuals have to the opposite sex” (406). The emotional state of marriage does not only affect the spouse and oneself. Other Financial BenefitsChildren are profoundly affected by the middle of paper...they have 75% less wealth and those who have divorced have 73% less wealth” (Popenoe and Whitehead, 394). One might ask, why is marriage such a creator of wealth? One theory is that people who create wealth are more likely to get married and stay married. Lower taxes are also an important factor in motivating people to get married. Sharing the insurance plan will most likely generate wealth. Although a small point, the fact that a spouse does not pay gift taxes is still an important point. In the event of death, social security benefits will be paid to the surviving partner. The State of Our Unions states that "marriage itself is a wealth-generating institution and it does so across an economic scale since two people live less than one, and as a long-term commitment and contract , it encourages economic specialization by working as a couple developing skills. in which they excel” (394).
