Essay / Voter Suppression and Government - 736
Voter suppression is no surprise in the American government. This goes unnoticed by most of the public, or they realize voter suppression after the damage has already been done. College students are an easy target since many students don't know as much as they should about the U.S. government and its electoral process. Why and how are students victims of voter suppression and what tactics are used? It is unfair and unjust for political parties, or their affiliates, to sneakily find ways to prevent students from voting. This political manipulation could cast doubt on the government's ability to remain true to its true purpose, which is to establish a government for the people and by the people. Candidates are allowed to discuss their policies for OUR government, but then turn around and try to keep certain demographics so they can have their fair say in the election of our political representatives. Political parties suppress student votes to manipulate the government while ignoring the contribution of young people. The tactics used to prevent students from voting do not physically prevent students from voting, but are used by creating new laws that would prevent their ballot from being rejected. According to the Huffington Post, North Carolina students are victims of voter suppression tactics. Parties have implemented ID laws that do not recognize college ID cards as a valid form of identification, nor can out-of-state students vote without an ID Valid from North Carolina. One can use these tactics because 13.7% of students are out of state and likely will not get a North Carolina ID card. Additionally, in North Carolina, polling places were strategically placed in the middle of the paper. .....minorities and minorities are increasing in the American population. As for students overall, we see a considerable increase in liberal ideology among 18-25 year olds. According to a 2012 Quinnipiac University survey, 67 percent of people ages 18 to 29 support legalizing marijuana and 63 percent support same-sex marriage. Republicans have eliminated or shortened early/absentee voting simply because it is used primarily by Democratic partisans. Republicans have a clear reason to attempt to suppress student voters, likely because they fear losing their footing in government and will undoubtedly attempt to suppress groups with new liberal ideologies. The country, as a whole, must push for change in the government's electoral process so that elites do not manipulate the very foundation on which our country is built..
