Essay / Compare to Light a Fire and Those Winter Sundays
Next comes Hayden's poem “Those Winter Sundays,” based on the story of a young boy wondering about his father while he worked every Sunday to make sure the house was warm for him. “On Sundays too, my father got up early.” (Hayden, p. 1047) this showed that the father got up early every Sunday while the readers rested on Sunday, so that they would think about why they would get up early on a day off. Plus, it wouldn't make sense to work on Sunday. The reader could not imagine working on Sunday; they would rather have a day off than work. Additionally, readers don't quite understand why the boy's father worked on Sundays when he could very well take the day off, so readers don't feel like the poem is working for them. “What did I know, what did I know of the austere and solitary offices of love? (Hayden, p. 1047) This form of question confused the readers for a minute until they realized he was thinking about his father and what made him who he is. Readers don't fully understand his experience because some of them may not have the same feelings as him.
