Essay / Changes introduced by Labor Governments
Changes introduced by Labor GovernmentsSome of the changes introduced by the Labor Government between 1945 and 1951 were very profound. For example, the changes made by the government to combat the five giant evils of society. The government wanted to attack poverty, want, disease and idleness. The introduction of the NHS was extremely profound. In 1945-46 Aneurin Bevan accepted the fundamental principle of a free and universal medical service, directly financed by the state. This change made by the Labor government was revolutionary because it provided medical help to everyone that was not possible before. This allowed the poor to be able to seek treatment for illness that was not possible before because they could not afford treatment privately. The government made other changes that were considered very profound. After the war, the British population lost as many as 700,000 homes and much of the existing stock was also damaged. By 1947, better quality social housing had been provided for the working class. Another change brought about by Labor was the introduction of new towns into the countryside, such as Crawley and Basildon. With the creation of these new towns, the pressure on major cities like London was relieved. In total, between 1945 and 1951, workers built more than a million new homes, as well as half a million temporary homes, and additionally repaired thousands of homes damaged during the war. These housing changes workers made were reasonable, but were not considered extremely profound. Labor made less profound changes to education in Britain. Labor significantly increased the education budget and the school leaving age was raised to 15. However, no real debate on the objectives and organization of education has really taken place. Thus, changes to the education system between 1945 and 1951 suggest that the Labor government's changes were not so profound. However, the National Insurance Act of 1946 was an extremely profound change brought about by the Labor government..
