Conrad becomes so depressed that while his parents are away, he attempts suicide. He did not succeed because of the early arrival of his parents. He is then sent to the hospital to treat his injuries and mental damage. After his release from the hospital, he is confronted with real-world situations. When his mother and father talk, his mother says, "He escaped this time, but even the smallest, most insignificant encounter is full of complications and dangers."
