Another essential nutrient for bone health is magnesium, which helps the body absorb calcium, neutralize metabolic acids and maintain strong bone structure. A growing body needs the support of magnesium to treat osteoporosis. Magnesium may alleviate the constipating effect of calcium when taken with calcium supplements (Bauer 1). Beans, sweet potatoes, beans, cashews, spinach and brown rice provide plenty of magnesium. Many fruits and vegetables contain potassium and other nutrients that contribute to bone health. Potassium consumption contributes to the decline in bone mineral density that occurs with aging, particularly in older women. Bananas, plums, carrots, lettuce and tomatoes contain potassium. The correct daily amount of potassium is 4,700 milligrams (Medical 2013). A healthy body needs vitamin D. The lives of modern people who live a busy daily life can be the cause of osteoporosis. The duration of exposure to the sun is not long enough and therefore does not produce vitamin D. It can cause osteoporosis due to the lack of vitamin D which ensures the strength of the bones in the foot. It therefore takes thirty minutes a day to bathe in the sun. In fact, calcium depends on vitamin D to help it move through the body. The human body can produce vitamin D under sunlight, but people's skin needs to be protected from the sun. The best sources are fish, especially salmon, and mackerel; milk and yogurt; mushrooms; and eggs. People need to take a supplement to be healthy because few foods are rich in vitamin D (Escherich, K 2009). Vitamin K is essential for the formation of osteocalcin, a type of protein found only in the body.
