  • Essay / Family Moral Values - 792

Many years ago, families had moral values that served a purpose in their lives. Mothers stayed home and looked after the children while fathers went to work and provided for the family. At home, mothers made children do their chores and homework before they could go out and play. Back then, there were no computers or video games, so children had to entertain themselves. At the end of the week, the family attended church on Sunday. These were simple family values that formed the foundations of families of the time. People were determined to do the right thing. Even though most families couldn't afford luxury cars or nice clothes, they still made the most of everything. The most important value learned at the time was respect and self-respect. Parents taught their children to respect them, other adults, and themselves. Teenagers today did not have the simple values of yesterday due to their exposure to the negative things in the world. “But the most significant aspects of any cod culture can be conveyed implicitly, not by rules or lessons, but by modeled behavior” (Barnlund, 2000, p56). Despite this, they have the freedom to explore the Internet, listen to negative lyrics in today's music, play violent video games, and watch inappropriate content on television. The reality is that teenagers have lost their sense of direction in the fast-paced world in which we live. Why do we blame the world for the deceptive things our children do? The media have obviously contributed to the materialization of our children. We can only learn from negative things, then try to build strong family values and teach our children how to make good decisions. Today, many young people have to face society even though they have no family...... middle of paper. ....spend time with their children and become more involved in their lives. If we were to compare today's parents to parents of the past, it would not be a comparison because today's parents are more withdrawn. They would buy an expensive vehicle or buy the latest fashion clothes instead of saving money for their children's college education. In other words, today's parents lack moral values. We cannot put all the blame on our children. The world we live in today is different from yesterday because we have allowed technology to control our minds and hearts. We have allowed our children to live this way and it robs us of the strong morals that our ancestors stood for. Reference Barnlund, D. (2000). Communication in a global village.
