World War II was a global war that brought the United States out of the Great Depression. During World War II, the United States changed economically and socially, emerging from the previous depression it faced. The United States was very advanced in the production of war goods, which boosted its economy, and socially, women were given more roles in society. The American response to World War II was the mobilization of a slack economy. During the war, 17 million new civilian jobs were created, industrial productivity increased by 96 percent (History of World War II 2009), and the federal government experienced enormous expansion. (The American Journal 695) The government worked extensively with programs that began during the New Deal. The War Manpower Commission encouraged workers to make the best use of their productivity. The Wartime Production Board invested $17 million in new factories and also used $181 billion for war supply contracts. The OPA fought against inflation. They controlled prices and rationed products.
