According to Biology Online, animal testing is defined as the use of animals in experiments and development projects, usually to determine toxicity, dosage and the effectiveness of tested drugs before proceeding to clinical trials on humans. Animal experimentation has continued since ancient Greece, when Aristotle and Hippocrates first created their model of the human body based on what they observed during animal dissection. Then the Romans used animals to perform more psychological tests on animals like pigs, monkeys, and dogs. After this, the Renaissance period was devoted to physiological studies. Since then, the 20th century saw a dramatic increase in animal testing until 1980, when activists began to oppose the labs. Activists have failed to protect animal rights in some cases and recent decades have seen a notable increase in animal testing for many reasons (Baumans). Today, despite the efforts of activists, animal testing is still commonly used. However, animal testing is unethical and should be banned. Proponents of animal testing believe that animals are necessary for any type of medical advancement. They believe that without live animal testing, our medical field could not improve. Scientists assume that humans would be extremely embarrassed if they did not test drugs on animals before their release into the human world. They also believe that animals are tested for various behavioral and genetic tests. Proponents of animal testing feel that animals are a great help to psychologists in learning more about the brain and how the human brain works.
