Essay / An Analysis of Sandra Cisneros and the Old Girls - 1298
An example where this is evident is when Perfecto, Estrella's father-in-law and Petra's husband, is repairing the barn. Perfecto scolded Estrella and told her to stay away from the barn. Estrella tells him "You're right. You're not my dad" (Viramontes27). Instead of doing what she was told, she told Perfecto that he wasn't her father. Estrella breaks out of the submissive and obedient feminine mold she was supposed to follow by denouncing Perfecto. She doesn't address Perfecto in a formal way, like sir or Perfecto. Instead, she addresses him as "you are", which is more casual and informal. Additionally, women were expected to follow and meet certain standards and expectations. One of them was to obey the commands of a male and remain silent. This has not always been the case for all women. Women like Vashti, who refused to give in to her husband's whims, or Sandra Cisneros who chose not to marry and escape the life lessons she had seen. Women are given set expectations and standards, but not all women will meet them.
