These connections are simply culturally constructed. Critical theories reject the idea that masculinity is dominant and femininity is subordinate. There should be no hierarchical relationship placing men “above” or “above” women. Furthermore, sexual orientation is unrelated to gender identification, meaning that gay men are no more feminine than heterosexual men and lesbians are no more masculine than heterosexual women. One of the three key theories in critical gender theories is standpoint theory. First, this theory concerns the different ways in which we experience situations. Perception is key, have you ever been on a date and he's having a great time, and you're ready to call it a day? Second, standpoint theory focuses on the experiences we have had, with our own lives being important sources of “expertise.” You could say that women understand life and how it works better because we interact in a male-dominated work world as well as in our homes that are not so male-dominated. Women therefore understand the world of work and the home better than men.
