Essay / Why is childhood obesity becoming a serious problem?
Why is childhood obesity becoming a serious problem? Obesity is a serious problem in the United States. Obesity can have serious effects on children, and childhood obesity affects them as adults. Our family friend's son is ten years old and at least twenty pounds overweight. When I first saw him, several questions crossed my mind regarding his being overweight. Why is he becoming obese? What are the causes and effects of obesity? How does the symptom of obesity manifest itself? They live near me and we visit each other frequently. So I had the chance to monitor the activities of our friend's son. He prefers to eat fast food, surgery and junk food and he stays indoors and plays video games. He doesn't want to get involved in outdoor games such as jumping and running. This lack of exercise and poor diet could be the cause of his excess weight. Today obesity is a big problem in America and my friend also suffers from this problem. So I decided to explore all the harms that affect childhood obesity. First, I needed to define obesity statistics. It is true that obesity is a growing problem. Obesity is defined as being dangerously overweight. According to the CDC report, approximately 12.5 million children and adolescents aged 2 to 19 are obese. In 2011-2012, obesity decreased from 13.9% to 8.4%. The prevalence of obesity was highest among the Hispanic group, 22.4%, non-Hispanic black youth 20.2%, non-Hispanic youth 14.1%, and Asian youth 8.6%. The CDC survey also found that most low-income preschoolers are obese. I wonder if there is a relationship between obesity and poverty because low-income people have a limited budget and therefore try to spend less money on groceries. They visit a fast food restaurant and buy cheaper...... middle of paper ......naked with calorie information. Michael Obama is the first lady to take the lead in changing eating and exercise habits in 10,000 child care centers across the country. This research shows that people are now more concerned about their health. We can see that at the grocery store, people are carefully monitoring the calories and healthy foods in their diet. Today, obesity is a serious problem in the United States and its main causes may be poor diet and lack of exercise. Genetics can also be one of the reasons for obesity. The government and many groups such as First Lady Michelle Obama, Mayor of New York are trying to reduce obesity and are launching different types of programs to support it. If our friend and other parents encouraged their children to eat healthy, exercise regularly and check their children's health regularly, which could reduce the rate of childhood obesity in the future.
