Every religion has its own symbol to represent it and each symbol has its own meaning. In this article I will take about three different symbols. These symbols are the pentagram, the Star of David and the Jain emblem. The pentagram originated around 3500 BC; it was found on broken pottery along with some of the earliest discoveries of language (Wolf). Many types of people have used this symbol, including the Mesopotamians, Hebrews, Egyptians, Christians, and Gnostics (Wolf). The Mesopotamians used royal inscriptions in art as a symbol of imperial power. For the Egyptians, it was a symbol of the underground womb and had a symbolic relationship with the concept of the pyramids. Christians have associated it with the five wounds of Christ; but after a while it was transformed in reaction to its neo-pagan usage (Wolf). The pentagram symbol comes from the Wiccan religion and is also called witchcraft. Wicca is a diverse and decentralized religion and is part of the pro-nature movements (Legge). For a very long time, those who practiced this religion were persecuted. They see that everything has a divine spirit, which means it is a polytheistic religion. Wiccans honor the elements of nature; earth, air, fire, water and spirit and their associated directions north, east, south and west (Legge). This information is related to the meaning of the symbol. The highest point of the pentagram is associated with divine figures in religion (Sabrina 67-81). The four lower points connect to the four important elements; fire, water, air and earth.
