It is used to describe the opposite of what is. In this drawing, the designer uses a form of situational and visual irony. Visual irony sends us a message contrary to that expected. So the idea that the Environmental Protection Agency itself created the pollution of the Animus River and ignored the pollution of the Flint River shows us how the EPA's actions are opposed to what they are expected. Visual irony is found in the caption describing the man's thoughts. They say Michigan's tap water does not contain enough toxic metals to be considered dangerous. The caption text contradicts the visual image of the water in the following way: it says "Looks good to me" while dirty, unclear tap water is seen flowing. Knowing the context and meaning labels, the audience can easily understand the message of the social problem represented by this cartoon. The artist uses different techniques in the cartoon to make it more emotional and attract the audience's attention. Water pollution problems must be resolved immediately as they have a detrimental effect on people's lives .
