Essay / Technology and imagery in the Veldt By Ray Bradbury
Children perceive the nursery as “much more important in their lives than their real parents”. (12) The description gives the reader insight into how spoiled children became dependent on the nursery. Children in nurseries must be taken care of; however, George and Lydia had never taken on the role of parents of the two children. The symbolic representation of parental figures is established by the nursery as it nurtures and influences children to rely on technology more than their current parents. Peter and Wendy considered their parents "Scrooges" (12), which hampered their relationship with the nursery. Both children were so dependent on the Advanced Home that they were willing to kill anyone who jeopardized their bond. This clearly shows that technology can strain relationships within families as it develops a sense of dependency in families.
