Essay / Louis XIV and absolutism: Louis the Great and the Sun King
Louis XIV, the king who exercised his monarchy for the longest period recorded in European history [72 years], one of the the most influential, also mentioned as Louis the Great and the Sun King. During his reign, Louis XIV played an important role in French art and literature, transformed the monarchy, and made France the powerful and dominant European country. Louis XIV is known for his great achievements that elevated France among other European countries, but this is a controversial statement. As much as Louis William Beik, in his book Louis Edict of Nantes published by Henri IV. But Louis XIV, who had first promised that the Huguenots could always practice their religion, changed his mind. Saint Maurice comments on the situation: “The Protestants discover that they no longer have protectors. The king abolished the Chambers of the Edict…” Louis XIV asserted that the majority of Huguenots converted to Catholicism and that the edict was therefore revoked. Huguenot churches were demolished and their gatherings prohibited. The repression of the Huguenots sparked protests and an anti-French movement within the Huguenot community which was one of the causes of the French Revolution. Overall, all of the king's orders and actions were aimed at establishing the absolute monarch and his absolute power, Louis XIV, over all aspects of the state. However, most of them had bad consequences. Even though Louis XIV became known as Louis the Great after his reign, the country remained weak and in financial difficulty.
