Salinger develops the story with the narrations of Holden Caulfield, a teenager who gets kicked out of a private school and struggles emotionally with different aspects of life. Throughout Holden's narration and flashbacks, it is evident that he pays close attention to details and draws conclusions about people based on their behavior. The first example is that of a former student, Ossenburger, who named his dormitory after him. Although he doesn't know him personally, Holden talks about him and how he imagines him. "You should see old Ossenburger. He probably just put them in a bag and threw them in the river. Anyway, he gave Pencey a bunch of money and they named our wing after him .At the first football game of the year he came "I went to school in that damn big Cadillac, and we all had to get up in the stands and give it a locomotive - that's encouragement. ...I gave a speech that lasted about ten hours... It killed me. (Salinger 16) Through this part of the narration, Holden reveals his perception of people through their actions. He noted that Ossenburger started out with corny jokes and used his money to attract attention. Holden does not does not consider Ossenburger's use of money to be effective and worthy of attention. He does not think that money should have any effect on social rank or status. Holden's opinion of Ossenburger shows his value. against materialism He doesn't like money being used to gain power or being used in a negative way. He prefers to have friendships and relationships based on personality.
