    The cases of Ken Saro Wiwa v Shell and Gbemre v Shell demonstrate to us the state in which oil has failed to contribute to the development of the people of Nigeria. Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria (SPDC), the main land operator, owns 55% of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), 30% Royal Dutch Shell, 10% Elf and 5% Agip. Shell, one of the shareholders of the SPDC, accused of its involvement in the execution of Ken Saro Wiwa and eight other Ogoni by the government. On the other hand, Shell also took Jonah Gbreme to court on behalf of himself and the Iwhreken community in the Niger Delta. The company was sued for its oil probe and manufacturing that resulted in gas flaring, accused of violating the human rights to life and causing widespread environmental pollution that leads to premature deaths , respiratory diseases, asthma, cancer and also causes a problem for food safety.
