  • Essay / Was Hamlet acting crazy or was he really crazy?

Insanity is difficult to determine because it is hidden in your mind and develops over time. Is Hamlet mad or is he simply acting to avenge his father's death? Hamlet decides to feign madness, which he thinks will help him discover the truth about his father's death. At the beginning of the play, Hamlet's plan seems to go smoothly because it catches some people off guard and he actually seems intentionally crazy. However, as the story progresses, the pretending to be mad diminishes considerably and it appears that Hamlet is actually going mad. Ultimately, the mad Hamlet is unaware of the chaos and heartache he inflicts on himself and everyone he loves. Instead of controlling his mentality, he controls it, resulting in tragedy and death. The events at the beginning of the play are so tragic that they are enough to drive anyone crazy. Returning home, he discovers that his father is dead and that his mother is now married to Claudius, the brother of King Hamlet. After this devastating news, a ghost speaks to Hamlet who is actually the spirit of the king. He learns that Claude murdered his father. He then swears to avenge his father's death and plots to catch Claudius. After this meeting, the Prince pretends to be crazy to see if the ghost is telling the truth. You can understand why Hamlet would act crazy because of these terrible events. Hamlet's initial plan is to act like a madman to find out exactly what happened to his father, but he also wants to avenge his death. This state of mind allows Hamlet to behave almost any way he wants and not be questioned about his behavior. Hamlet knows that it is so important to get the facts right because without hard evidence he could unjustly kill his uncle and have to end up in the middle of a paper...... with Hamlet for the murder of his father, Polonius, and conspires with King Claudius against Hamlet. After all these tragic events, the situation gets worse, Hamlet's two best friends plot against him, this drives him crazy. It all starts with an act of madness, then there is less acting and it ends up becoming the reality and tragedy of Hamlet for everyone. In conclusion, Hamlet could be considered mad, it is not just an act. At the beginning of the play, Hamlet acts like a madman in order to avenge his father's death. He can thus obtain vital information about the death of King Hamlet. However, this act soon takes over Hamlet's life, so that his personality and appearance completely changes and he begins to hurt the people most important and closest to him. Therefore, at the end of the play he was not acting like a madman, this act takes him and actually becomes a reality..
