“Failing to engage in the fight to anticipate, prevent, and mitigate global health problems would diminish America's stature in health care and jeopardize our own health, our economy and our national security,” said by the Institute of Medicine. Global health refers to a health phenomenon that transcends national boundaries. For example, global health would address issues such as: infectious and insect-borne diseases that can spread from one country to another. Thus, global health must be addressed through collaborative actions and solutions. On the other hand, countries tend to focus on other critical issues that arise today and therefore neglect the issue of global health. Some issues that countries focus on are the environment, education, and the economy. According to the National Post, the Dominion Institute conducted a survey in 2008 of young Canadians to determine what issues are most important. The results for issues important to young Canadians were twenty-seven percent for the environment, twenty-five percent for education, seventeen percent for the economy and fifteen percent for health. Overall, global health has been a topic of debate as to the level of importance it should have within a country. Global health should be of great concern to Canadians or any other country. There are several reasons why countries should address the problem of global health. One approach to designating global health as an important issue is to bring it into the philanthropic perspective. According to UNAIDS statistics, there were two million deaths from AIDS in 2008 and the number continues to grow. (Global HIV and AIDS Statistics, 2009) Additionally, more than three million people worldwide are estimated to be affected. This financial crisis and economic recession has affected Canada through growth in GDP, employment and productivity. GDP and employment growth were declining and productivity growth was declining. (Economic Snapshot, 2009) The recession in the Canadian economy has resulted in job losses and a financial burden on Canadians. So, the issue of economy is expected to be in focus due to the recession. Governments must establish plans and implement them in order to sustain our In conclusion; The prospect of solving the problems in the current country and then focusing on the problems of other countries implies that global health should not be of much interest to Canadians. Essentially, whether global health becomes an important issue for Canadians is a subject that is still under debate.
