Essay / The advantages and disadvantages of intellectual disabilities
These disabilities manifest themselves in different ways and for many different causes. This varies not only between periods, but also between cultures. The challenges are mainly due to the daily difficulties of living with a certain diagnosed disability and these challenges are intensified by social stigma and cruelty. Ignorance about it gives way to negative social perceptions that affect both people with disabilities and their families. Initially, intellectual disabilities were known by many names, but now many cases have become widespread and research continues in the same area. The social prejudices of certain periods are responsible for the nomenclature of many disabilities distinguished. Due to the illogical social construct, the humanity of these people was assumed to be overshadowed by their illness. They are often called "mentally retarded", which objectifies them as things and not as people, which is an insult to their character. Regardless of a person's medical condition, it is degrading to be called such names and it has haunted many generations of families to treat a disabled member of their family as it would lead to social stigma which would ruin their prestige in this supposedly informed and rational world.
