Essay / Analysis of Goodness Beyond Virtue by Raimond Gaita
The story makes an intelligent emotional argument, which shows the transformative effects of love. We see a familiarity in Gaita's story that we see in other stories. The love of one person for another changes the lives not only of the lover and beloved, but also of those who witness it. Gaita gives many other examples throughout her article of “unconditional and conditioned” love (23). Some examples he gives are the examples of parents loving their children as children learn to love each other through the actions of their parents, and even the religious anthropomorphic view of God who loves us all unconditionally (Gaita, 22-24). . The most interesting part of these loves is Gaita's assertion that they are conditioned. Parents are taught that loving unconditionally is what they are supposed to do. Society tells us that a bad parent is one who does not meet their child's need for this kind of love. Sometimes parents don't satisfy this kind of love and instead focus their love elsewhere, while other parents look at them as if there is something wrong with them. This is because they do not fit what society teaches. I completely agree that parents should give their children all the love they need, and I was lucky to have parents who gave me that kindness. However, this is not entirely instinctive, as some parents have never taught it or actively avoid it.
