Three Styles of ArchitectureIn this essay, information will be given in order to compare and contrast the data on three different styles of architecture. The three styles are Art Deco, Art Nouveau and Neo Gothic. In order to give a clear and complete explanation of these styles, information about the architecture will be given first and then the three styles will follow with points of comparison and contrast between the two. First of all, to inform about architecture, you have to explain what it is. Architecture, referring to building, is defined as “the practice of designing buildings and the resulting products; customary use refers only to designs and structures that are culturally significant” (Ferrier 20). Someone might say that architecture should appease its intended uses, but it should be technically sound and convey tasteful meaning. Although some of the larger buildings survive their original use, these buildings now represent not only beautiful works of art, but also the history of our culture. Architectural achievements show the true achievements of the society in which they were built. It is amazing to see how much architecture has flourished. As technology has developed and people have gained knowledge about the wide range of architectures, many different forms have developed. Although we will only look at a few, it will be easy to understand why people find architecture so interesting. For example, the Art Nouveau style, which has become very popular in Europe and the United States, is an elegant decorative art style characterized by its intricate and detailed patterns of curved lines. An excellent example of this type of art is the John Hudson Thomas WL Locke House 1911, in Oakland, California (Partridge). Art Nouveau is an international style of decoration and architecture. This style spread quickly. It developed in reaction to other excessive revivals of academic art that were taking place at the time. At this time, artists were setting out to create a new type of art. They wanted to have something that would be a total and complete decorative style combining all the arts (including painting, graphics, sculpture, decorative arts, and architecture) into an expressive whole. The importance of Art Nouveau cannot be denied by Earl A Powell. III, director of the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC, explains: “The Art Nouveau style was deliberately international. » He continues... middle of paper... even though there was an implicit tension throughout the movement between the decorative and the modern. Art Deco added to order. The stepped shapes, rounded corners, triple-striped decorative elements, and black decoration show how Art Deco added order to history (Jacobs). Gothic Revival architecture added beautiful design to many churches and other buildings. Architecture is something that is often overlooked. Her beauty is exquisite. The work that goes into each piece of art is intense. It shows how much people love what they do and how creative they really are. Architecture is something people have to be interested in to truly love.Works CitedArchitecture.com. Royal Institute of British Architects. October 5, 2002 Ferrier, John-Louis.
