Essay / The Negative Effects of Uniforms in Schools - 1117
Cost creates a negative outlook on uniforms due to their rising prices. Students have other events happening outside of school, such as picnics, banquets, and different formal occasions, for which they have to spend extra money. A child whose guardian receives a low income does not have a wide variety of clothes to choose from in their closet. Children need clothing to wear outside of school that cannot be provided. When children transfer to different schools, they cannot wear the same uniform. Children cannot move around or do activities due to lack of money and clothes. “The prices represent an additional cost to taxpayers who send their children to public schools” (Wilde). A large percentage of schools in states with fewer students are not getting along better with each other and are not experiencing significant gains. Principals and teachers say student success is not taken into account. The increase in absences, tardiness, truancy, and referrals coming into the office for behavioral issues is not reduced by uniform policies. More suspensions and expulsions are increased consequences due to increased rules in the Uniform Policy. Students will act as they wish based on their education and what they have learned over time. “Unknowingly, the adults in our lives have practiced some of the most productive behavior modification. Once our household chores were finished, we were given “permission” to read. In other words, our elders considered reading a privilege, a highly sought-after prize, bestowed only on hardworking people who have earned it. How intelligent they are” (Kalish). A student learns to act based on what his parents let him do, which influences his behavior at school. Student attire affects students' attitude and behavior depending on the weather they are comfortable in.
