His characters have their true colors revealed slowly and subtly, just like in real life. Meeting someone for the first time, it's impossible to really know who they are. Only with time can we truly judge their character. Even then, it's difficult. Society is a lie, an illusion. It is so difficult to discern who is honest in a dishonest world. People put on false faces to hide their true intentions and ambitions. Although scammers are associated with this, anyone can hide under a "disguise" to hide their true nature. Even if you have known someone for a long time, there may be aspects of their personality that are hidden from you. From Brutus, Judas, Benedict Arnold, to today's Daisy Buchanan, appearances are not what they seem and society is full of liars. I've been made aware of the lies, but knowing they exist and finding them are two very different things.
