Essay / Activist photography by Sebastiao Salgardo - 1770
“I try with my images to raise a question, to provoke a debate, so that we can discuss problems together and find solutions. » In this essay, my goal is to answer the following question: how does Sebastiao Salgardo's activist photography reflect media journalism? I will look at a brief history of the activist photography movement and also examine Sebastian's journey. I believe that Salgardo paints an accurate picture of what is happening in the country across the world, he visits these places and then gets in tune with the people in these situations, he wants to provoke debate and discussion about these issues in order to to inform people of the real problems. It is true that in the 1980s Salgardo's work was considered too distressing, too distressing for the general American public to see and that, in the eyes of the media, the general public would not be interested in seeing these images, that leaves us with “celebrity journalism.” » and rather a dishonest picture of what is really happening. Since the beginning of photography, some photographers have confronted the life around them and shared the world they saw. Their photographs continue to remind us of our common humanity. Through their activism and their testimony, they hope to change the world by revealing the truth. These images were taken on the streets of Glasgow and represent a changing vision of photography.
