Essay / Analysis reportI. HistoryNetscape Communications Corporation, originally named MosaicCommunications Corporation (MCOM), was founded in April 1994 by Jim Clark and Marc Andreessen. They released their first navigation products for free to Internet users in September 1994. Jim Clark is president of Netscape CommunicationsCorporation. Before founding the company, Clark was president of SiliconGraphics, a computer hardware maker he founded in 1982. Marc Andreessen is vice president of technology at Netscape Communications. He helped develop the original World Wide Web graphical browser, Mosaic, while at the University of Illinois at Urbana/Champlain. The Internet is a global network connecting thousands of networks using high-speed digital lines called ATM, T3 and T1. It was just being introduced to the general public when Netscape was being designed and they would NOT have succeeded if they did not have this time advantage.II. LocationNetscape is headquartered in Mountain View, California, in the heart of Silicon Valley. However, due to the nature of the global networks over which its software is transmitted, Netscape is able to sell its products worldwide via the Internet. There are virtually no walls between its “retail outlets.” Its software products are also distributed in computer stores around the world.III. Product LineNetscape Navigator is software for browsing information available on the Internet. It is available for all popular computer platforms including 16-bit PC, 32-bit PC, Macintosh and all UNIX systems. Navigator also allows users to view their email over the Internet through the use of a password encryption system (MIME). Netscape Server is software that installs on UNIX and Windows NT systems that allows data to be distributed over the Internet's World Wide Web. .It also provides for secure transactions such as those involving credit cards.IV. Company StructureThe founders, Jim Clark and Marc Andreessen, own 35% of the company. There are other significant shareholders and it is also public. The board of directors and other members of the executive management are listed in the following table: James H. Clark - Chairman of the Board of Directors James L. CompuServe entered into a licensing agreement with Netscape to allow CompuServe users to use Netscape as their primary browser software. (03/11/96, DJIN)X. ConclusionI would suggest this stock as a good investment in the stock market game as its price fluctuates enough to make a decent profit from trading it. I wouldn't suggest Netscape as a good real-life investment until its price drops though, as it appears to be on a downward trend. (Although Netscape is also a good long-term investment, due to its potential and Internet demand) Works Viewed Netscape 10Q Quarterly Report (4th Quarter 1995) Netscape Annual Report 1995 Netscape Public Prospectus Star Stock Offering Ledger, "Net Day '96", ?Dow Jones News Retrieval Service, (3/11/96, 3/12/96)
