Essay / The Social Impact of the Atomic Bomb - 1185
The Social Impact of the Atomic BombOne of the greatest social impacts of the atomic bomb was that it caused people to fear the nuclear explosion and of the war. Before the first atomic bomb was dropped, a typical war meant people feared casualties, physical suffering, and the loss of loved ones. With the new age of the atomic bomb, every future war has the potential to become a nuclear war, and nuclear war breeds a new type of fear. This new fear is the fear of the end of the world and of humanity. When there is a weapon that can level an entire city and kill 66,000 people while injuring 69,000 (atomicarhive.com) with long-term health effects, people will obviously be afraid. . People fear that there is no future for humanity. If a nuclear war were to occur, half of a country, or even an entire country, could easily be destroyed to the point of becoming uninhabitable due to radiation. Thanks to a Stanford University psychological study of young survivors of World War II, it was found that almost half of the subjects surveyed believe that a nuclear war would result in the complete annihilation of humanity (Koschin and Kabachenko 4). The study also found that "95 percent [of subjects] expressed serious concern about the danger of war and 44 percent lived in fear, waiting for war" (Koschin and Kabachenko 2). Generations following the age of the atomic bomb will continue to fear that every war will become a world-ending nuclear war. The US government also sees the catastrophic potential of nuclear weapons and has begun to disarm its nuclear weapons stockpile and ban future nuclear tests. Treaties such as the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty and the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons...... middle of paper ......! New areas of radioactive contamination are also being discovered in other countries as other nuclear developing countries begin to become familiar with atomic bomb technologies. Unfortunately for us, the effects of the atomic bomb will not go away anytime soon due to the long half-life of contaminants and nuclear developing countries.
