  • Essay / The Pacific Crest Trail - 751

Many hikers undertake the rigorous journey of hiking the Pacific Crest Trail, also known as the (PCT). Starting in Southern California on the Mexican border, the Pacific Crest Trail travels a total distance of 2,650 miles through California, Oregon, and Washington until reaching the Canadian border (Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail). Clinton Clarke and Warren Rogers were the first to expand the PCT in the 1930s (PCTA). The PCT is accessible through several major cities such as San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Sacramento, Portland, and Seattle (pcta). When tackling this trail, there are several factors to consider before the big hike. For example, some essential gear and equipment must be carried when hiking the PCT. The first and most important item to pack is a detailed map of the area and a compass to stay on the right path. When transporting these two items, make sure you place them somewhere where they won't get damaged. The second most important item to pack is a first aid kit. Carrying a first aid kit is easy, but you need to know how to use it because it can give a false sense of security. The best solution is to always take the necessary steps to avoid injury or illness (pcta). Sun protection should also be considered when hiking the PCT. This is why sunglasses and sunscreen should be worn to prevent sunburn on the skin. Although some people do not hike at night, it would be best to bring a flashlight or headlight with extra batteries in case you travel at night. Knowing how to make a fire in nature is a very useful skill, but if there is no knowledge in this area, carrying lighters or waterproof matches would be more complicated...... middle of paper... ... With this factor taken into consideration, it is evident that very detailed planning is required before embarking on hiking the PCT. Some people are ready within a few weeks of deciding to leave, depending on their living situation. The hiker should have a few weeks to confirm transportation to the border and hiking permits to avoid prolonging the start of the adventure. Without the proper training, gear, and equipment, this hike will be very difficult, which is why it is important to prepare systematically for hiking the Pacific Crest Trail.
