Essay / Cheeky Chaucer: A Character Analysis of Chaucer
Cheeky Chaucer “A Character Analysis of Chaucer” Chaucer's prologue is an introduction to the characters he will soon write about in his short stories. It was written to fight the Italian Buchartio and write his own version to become famous. The reason the Italian version became so popular was because of the way it was written in street people's Italian, in other words, it could be understood by all of Italy, not just by the rich. Chaucer wanted to do the same thing, but stopped when deciding what language to write it in. He considered Russian and other languages, but quickly settled on English. This is extremely important because it is the first time English has been written, it is generally a spoken language without a written form. This is why it was so important to the English language that he wrote it specifically in English. To give the language a written form, as it were. It was a mixture of East German and native Anglo-Saxon. It's hard to read, because it's the first time English was written, so there was no precise way to spell the words, and they were spelled the way they sounded phonetically. "When this Aprill with his shoures soot The droghte of March pierced to the root, and bathed every veyne in swich liquor" (Page 97, lines 1-3). Typically this meant that the same word was spelled fifty different ways throughout the prologue Although it is difficult to read, it is still an excellent story, and has very deep characters, which are fully developed and add more detail to the story. and make it one of the best stories in English in existence today Initially, my first favorite character in Chaucer's prologue was... middle of paper ... that when this song was sung, he should preach and. grant his honey tongue And (finally, he could) earn the crowd's money" (Pages 690-696 and 731-733) this is exactly how people today do things only for themselves, not for others around them This is one of the things that Chaucer emphasizes throughout his stories, that greed and other selfish acts alone will lead to the destruction of humanity. The characters in Chaucer's prologue are very well developed characters and in their own right, he goes very deep into the depths of humanity. character who only enhances his story, making it one of the most beloved in the English language. Whether it's the characters of the Pardoner, the Nun or the rich Monk, they all express things about people that need to be changed in society, which I completely agree with. 1 page 90-120
