Essay / Dramatic Change in Othello - 1882
In this essay I would like to explain how William Shakespeare makes the change in Othello so dramatic for the audience in Act 3, Scene 3 of the play, but before getting into the details, I would like to review the main points of the piece for you. So basically what happens is that there is a tragic downfall of a "black Venetian general" Othello who was a "confident" and "strong" person, but because he chose Cassio as lieutenant, Iago gets really "jealous" because he thought he deserved this title more than Cassio and he really wanted this title. Iago then cleverly plans to "destroy" Othello and Cassio, as Iago is known as a "friendly" person. His plan might be easier, but there is only one person, Roderigo, who knows the real Iago, but Iago need not worry. because Roderigo is stupid and can be easily fooled. Roderigo knows this because he loves Desdemona but she doesn't know, she loves Othello and they got married in secret, only Cassio knowing about their secret marriage and Iago tricks Roderigo into giving money in saying that Desdemona would be his. Iago and Roderigo see them get married. This is where Iago has the opportunity to destroy Cassio and Othello. Afterwards we see that Iago tells Roderigo to tell Desdemona's father, Brobantio, that Othello and Desdemona are getting married and that Brobantio is angry about killing Othello, but he manages to convince not only Brobantio but also the Duke. Othello is then told to go to Cyprus to fight Turkey and Desdemona asks permission from the Duke if she can go too and his permission is granted. This is where Iago creates a misunderstanding between Othello, Cassio and Desdemona by making Othello believe that Cassio and Desdemona are having an affair, with Desdemona forcing...... middle of paper ...... this is a was made by Iago. Othello decided at that moment to break up with her without even hearing what she had to say about it. If I were Othello, I would have at least asked him if all this was true or not. It made the audience want to stop all of this and yell at them not to believe Iago and it really excited the audience because they felt like they were part of the play. I also believe that there is one-sided "jealousy" between Othello, Cassio and Iago because Iago is really angry that Cassio got the title that Iago thought he deserved and that Othello received more respect from the whites than Iago who is racist. The staging was done cleverly to make an impact on the audience, like when Othello was angry and upset thinking about Cassio and Desdemona together, the scene became darker, so we as an audience knew that this was not a positive atmosphere..
