  • Essay / Courage by Atticus from To Kill a Mockingbird, Antigone...

Courage is the ability to do something that is scary. Nelson Mandela once said, “I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph of it.” The courageous man is not the one who is not afraid, but the one who overcomes this fear. » To accomplish anything, you have to overcome your fears. Atticus Finch believes that courage is knowing that you are going to lose, but continuing to follow through until the end. His mindset is to never give up, even if you know and everyone knows that you will not succeed in what you do. I agree with Atticus Finch's definition of courage: even if all odds are against you, you must push through and persevere. True courage is when you fight for what is right, whether you win or lose. For example, while Jem and Atticus discuss Mrs. Dubose and her battle with morphine addiction, Atticus says, "I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of having the idea that Courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It’s when you know you’re licked before you start, but you start anyway and you see it through no matter what” (112). Courage, as defined by Atticus Finch, does not mean that you have to do something beyond your abilities and fears, but simply means following through on something that you know will not work in your favor . He demonstrates this in the case of Tom Robinson when, even though the prejudices of the population and the jury did not support him, he followed his conscience and persevered throughout the fight. Additionally, when Scout, Jem, and Atticus talk about this one-sided affair and the prejudices involved, Atticus simply states, "Just because we were licked a hundred years before we started doesn't mean we shouldn't try to win" ( 76). The best place for equality and a society without prejudice in the minds of most African Americans. In conclusion, Atticus displays commendable courage and behavior, in many cases, throughout the decade. history; not by fighting or killing, but by defending one's beliefs in a civilized and determined manner. His sense of morality and equality motivated him to take risks and was praised by African-American society for the actions he took, as a white man, to support black people. In many other cases, people were able to demonstrate courage, and it had positive consequences. Antigone pleased the gods but paid the price for her unimaginable actions. Rosa Parks inspired many people to feel freedom from racism and segregation. Courage is taking risky actions, that even if you have a low chance of success, you continue to carry them out and never give up..
