  • Essay / Treat the person, not the disease - 1397

Caring is at the heart of the nurse's power to work with people in a respectful and therapeutic way. In the therapeutic relationship, the patient and nurse learn about each other and the relationship becomes a healing relationship because: it mobilizes hope for both the patient and the nurse; help the client use social, emotional or spiritual resources; find an interpretation or understanding of the illness, symptoms or emotions that is acceptable to the patient (Perry and Sams, 2014). Nursing theorist Dr. Jane Watson describes caring in a spiritual sense. Sister Simone Roach, another nursing theorist, asks what nurses actually do when providing care. This essay will describe and explain Jean Watson's and Simone Roach's theories on nursing and how they are incorporated into the article "The Art of Nursing" written by Michelle Loewenstein. A number of nursing researchers have developed theories of caring, due to its importance to the practice of nursing (Perry & Sams, 2014). Sister Roach (1988), in her book Human act of caring, describes that our capacity for care is almost indestructible, because of the way we are. It is the most mutual and authentic creation of humanism. In her nursing theory, she defines six “Cs”: compassion, competence, confidence, awareness, commitment and behavior (Munro-Gilbert, 2013). Dr. Jean Watson defines ten carative factors or caritas of the care process. (Alligood and Tomey, 2010, p. 95). The article “The Art of Nursing” reveals the behavior and decisions of nurses who express concern. We will analyze and recognize their meaning through the ten caring factors set out by Watson and the six “Cs” of Sister Roach: Formation of a humanistic-altruistic value system: Practice...... middle of document.. ..../search.proquest.com.dproxy.library.dc-uoit.ca/docview/204600297?accountid=26375.McLaughlin, M.
