  • Essay / Video Games - 600

Video games have been around for a long time and are meant to entertain people. Over the years, video game technology has become more graphic; it went from cartoons to looking like the real world. People are now saying that as games seem more real and become more violent, young people are becoming more aggressive. Seeing these images also causes them to desensitize themselves to the violence of the world, as if they were just watching a video game that had them hurting someone and thinking they could hit the restart button and everything would be fine. Although children can become violent because of video games, there is no link between violent video games and aggression. When I was younger, I played video games all the time and a lot of them were violent. I know these games weren't real and it didn't cause me to become a violent person. As I read Christopher Ferguson's article, he states that "more recent research has not shown that children who play VVG are more violent than other children, nor injured in any other identifiable way." ยป (Ferguson, 2011). Basically, Ferguson is saying that with all the negativity surrounding violent video games; according to one study, children who play these games are not more violent than children who do not play them. This idea is important because people use violent games to explain why children are more aggressive, but according to research, there is no correlation between children acting aggressively while playing video games. Video games are intended to be used for fun and entertainment. People who don't understand video games see children acting out and are the first to blame their behavior on violent video games. As I continue to read Ferguson's article that he reveals... middle of paper ... more real and become more violent, there will always be critics who blame video games for the bad and aggressive behavior of young people. Research has shown that there is no relationship between violent video games and aggression. Video games were designed to entertain, not to put violent images in people's minds. If you are concerned about the violence of the games, just look at the rating before purchasing and if it is not age appropriate, do not buy it for your children. Continue to teach your children right from wrong and let them play, because as long as they know what is real and what is not, everything will be fine. References Ferguson, C. (December 7, 2011).
