The explorer Christopher Columbus made four voyages across the Atlantic Ocean from Spain: in 1492, 1493, 1498 and 1502. He was determined to find a direct river route from the west to Europe to Asia, but he never did. Instead, he stumbled upon the Americas. Although he did not really discover the New World, millions of people already lived there, his travels marked the beginning of centuries of Atlantic conquest and colonization. However, there has been some controversy over whether or not Columbus is a hero due to some of his actions; One hundred years after his arrival in America, European exploration and exploitation resulted in the deaths of 90 million natives. His own diaries detail horrific atrocities committed apparently at his behest” (conference paper). In terms of celebrating, I say we shouldn't do it because we are celebrating all the actions he took; The murder of many natives, the creation of slavery and the mistreatment of his own people. Columbus is basically called a tyrant. Instead, Columbus Day should be celebrated as Indigenous Day. A day of remembrance for all who suffered under Columbus
