Essay / BIG BROTHER - 778
The book “1984” written by George Orwell shows the life of an average person in a totalitarian state. The book explains the problems and dangers of a totalitarian government (Big Brother) that controls and holds power over the people. For a totalitarian government, especially in this novel, to maintain control of its citizens, it must get into everyone's heads by "brainwashing" them. Big Brother achieved this by manipulating the English language, rewriting world history, and constantly reminding everyone that the government is watching them. Language allows people to freely express what they think and feel. However, free speech is something that Big Brother despises. If there is freedom of speech, everyone can express what they think about the government. In the novel, George Orwell shows how Big Brother invents "Newspeak", a watered-down version of the English language. When Syme was speaking to Winston, he said: “Don't you see that the very purpose of Newspeak is to restrict the range of thought? Ultimately, we will make thoughtcrime literally impossible, because there will be no words to express it. » Pg.49 The main goal of Newspeak is for no one to be able to conceptualize or question the power of Big Brother. Another statement Syme made to Winston is: "By 2050, sooner, probably – all real knowledge of the ancient language will be gone." All the literature of the past will have been destroyed. Chaucer, Shakespeare, Milton, Byron – they will only exist in Newspeak. versions, not only transformed into something different, but actually transformed into something contradictory to what they were. Pg.50 Changing the English language is like mind control because now no one will have middle of paper......the odds are against them If the person has no one to trust except the government, no wonder Big Brother had an influence on the minds of their citizens. For Big Brother to have complete control over the minds of their citizens, they just need to keep doing what they're doing. When language is forcibly changed, people cannot express themselves. history has been rewritten, people just need to trust the government and who to turn to for answers. When someone is always under government surveillance, people will feel like they are doing something wrong, which produces great anxiety with all these control tactics. Brother used the reason why they have such control over a population. If Big Brother didn't control a population this way then they wouldn't be in power because the citizens would know that what they are doing is inhumane and rebellions would overthrow them..
