    The French were born on August 30, 1748 in Paris, France. Jacques was the son of Louis-Maurice and Marie-Geneviève Buron. Jacques' paintings are said to have helped put an end to the lightness of the Rococo period. Unfortunately for David, he lost his father at the age of nine because his father fought a duel and lost. To rub salt on the wound, David's mother then leaves him, leaving him to be raised by his two uncles. When David showed his taste for painting, his uncles passed it on to François Boucher, a family friend and talented painter. However, as David leaned more towards a neoclassical style than rococo, Boucher sent him to Joseph-Marie Vien. The young painter then began to grow up and at the age of 18, he was enrolled at the Royal Academy (Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture). Unfortunately for the young artist, he was going through a difficult period, losing numerous competitions and without a mother or father, he lacked support. David became depressed and even attempted suicide by avoiding eating. However, the young artist rose again in 1774 because he received the Prix de Rome, a government grant which guaranteed well-paid commissions. The fellowship included a trip to Italy, which he and Vien used to study ancient Rome and its masterpieces. It was when the artists returned that he started to become famous.
