  • Essay / The Modern English Period - 1384

MODERN ENGLISH PERIOD The Modern English Period takes place between the Middle English Period and the Early Modern English Period. The modern English period begins in the 15th century and ends in the late 17th century. Modern English is used by the English colonies, Wales, Ireland, Scotland and England. The language comes from Germanic and Anglo Frisian. At this time, the origins of the words are Yiddish, German and Italian. William Coxton is one of the most important men of the time because he was at the forefront of the spread of printing and carried out numerous translations, he contributed to communication between languages. The other important man is Shakespeare. In the 16th century, a reform took place and in the 17th century, Francis Bacon launched a new science. These events affected the evolution and development of language. In the modern period, the writer modifies certain words by using new words instead of borrowed words. Sir Thoomas Elyt tries to introduce new words which are obtestation, maturity, purity and modesty. In this period, many writers mainly reviewed Latin borrowings. But many Latin words accepted by people and writers did not replace any words. Sir John Cheke did the translation and managed to add a few words in English. On the other hand, Ralph Lever and Nathaniel Fairfax tend to use borrowings from Latin in their texts. In terms of poetic vocabulary, Edmund Spenser is an important poet. After using certain terms which are archaism and rhetoric, many poets try to imitate it but sometimes they make mistakes. Despite their errors, they inject something into the poetic vocabulary. Some writers criticize other writers who use different grammar rules. For example, they use prepositions at the end of a sentence and they make mistakes using p...... in the middle of a sheet... what man can do to achieve something, c is to bring natural bodies together or to move them away from each other. The rest is done by nature working within. In the example above, the author explained the meaning with shorter words, while the translator used phrasal verbs and the translator divided the sentence into two sentences. Additionally, there is literary meaning in the original text using effective words. But the translator used clear words from which it is not possible to deduce literary meanings. In conclusion, there is not much difference between the Early ME period and the ME period. There are some uses of modal verbs at the beginning of ME, while it is very common in ME. And the translator opened the sentences by extending the words. There is therefore a loss of literary meaning. Besides, it is not that difficult to understand texts written in Early ME.
