  • Essay / Mastery of autonomy and summary by Daniel Pink

While this may be true, Daniel Pink in his book Drive lists three elements of motivation, autonomy, mastery and purpose. Gunther states, “Management is not about walking around and seeing if people are in their offices” (Gunther as cited in Pink, 2009, p. 84). This happens by creating the conditions for people to do their best work. Among the three, autonomy is considered the most important. Edward Deci and Richard Ryan define autonomy as a human concept in which people seek and improve their lives. Similarly, Pink explained how autonomy has a powerful effect on individual performance and attitude” (Pink, 2009, p. 88). AutonomyPink states, “Autonomy has a powerful effect on individual performance and attitude” (p. 88). Allowing employees to have a certain degree of freedom and discretion can lead to greater job satisfaction. Pink (2009) states that “the goal of Motivation 2.0 was to seek conformity, Motivation 3.0 seeks engagement, and only engagement can produce mastery.” While autonomy is of greatest importance, mastery is equally important.
