  • Essay / Wearable Art: An Innovation in the Twentieth Century

    In a broader historical perspective, people view clothing as an elemental demand that cannot be replaced in human life. Clothing has become a typical topic not only for researchers but also for students. This is the reason why I visited a museum in Te Manawa and saw many exhibitions on wearable arts. As soon as I entered the arts field, I began to wonder why artists created these costumes. I stopped at an exhibition called “Reflection on Time,” which impressed me the most. Dressed in a hooded jacket with jeans, I was almost overwhelmed by its magnificence. It was a collection of plastics so transparent that you can see through it and observe every line of the model statue. It made me feel like I was standing in front of an elegant lady. I had never seen such pure beauty before. Being a loyal Lady Gaga fan, I found these unique costumes very interesting. I then did some research on what we call “wearable arts”. Surprisingly, it turned out that wearable arts has become a popular term recently. In fact, it's quite difficult to define what wearable arts actually are. Basically, wearable art consists of innovative combinations of objects that can express artists' emotions or provoke emotional reactions in audiences and that can be worn under certain circumstances. Wearable art was first created in 1987 during the exhibition called "The World of WearableArt". , (World History…, sd, npg). So far, it has been about three decades since the first wearable art exhibition was organized by a sculptor, Suzie Moncrieff, in Nelson, a rural town in southern New Zealand, in the hope of creating a new form of performance in an art gallery. Looking to the future, no one can be sure whether wearable arts will become mainstream and become a new trend for future generations. As the demands for innovation in the field of clothing increase, we can expect brilliant development for wearable arts.
