Essay / Lying is the most fun you can have - 1208
The propaganda machine set up by the Bush administration has channeled many lies regarding the Jessica Lynch story. The media, in turn, played and replayed his story excessively. These numerous lies were later published in a Washington Post article, about which Krakauer notes that: Thanks in large part to the details first revealed in this article, as well as the dramatic video of the rescue distributed to the media by the he army, Jessica Lynch dominated the world. news for weeks. Details of the incident provided by military public affairs officers gave rise to an absolutely captivating story that television, radio and print journalists found irresistible: a petite blonde clerk with supplies from a flea market town in West Virginia is ambushed in Iraq and fearlessly cloaked Fedayeen terrorists with her M16 until she runs out of ammunition, after which she is shot, stabbed, captured, tortured and raped before finally being snatched from her barbaric Iraqi captors in a daring raid by American commandos. (207-208) Krakauer admits that the article indicates that there was no verification of the details relating to Jessica Lynch's story, but this was largely ignored (208). It seems the administration is as good at covering its back as it is at manipulating the general public. This can be seen in the warning in the Washington Post article. The article states that "Pentagon officials said they had heard 'rumors' about Lynch's exploits but had no confirmation" (qtd. in Krakauer 208). They knew the truth about Jessica Lynch would come out eventually, and as long as the lies had the desired effect; they didn't care. The real story of what happened to Jessica Lynch is much less extreme. As Krakauer points out... middle of paper ......if we supported the war in Iraq and kept our troops there, the better. As Krakauer illustrates, "Bin Laden viewed the invasion of Iraq as a tremendous gift from President Bush – a 'rare and essentially precious' opportunity to spread jihad" and that "the US occupation fueled Muslim anger." even more so than the invasion of Afghanistan.” had, inciting crowds of Arab men to join the ranks of Al-Qaeda” (255). The Bush administration's treatment and transformation of the stories of these heroic soldiers into a propaganda vehicle for their own ends was abhorrent. I am disgusted that they are using people and lies to maintain their unjust war, and their war should indeed have been unjust if they had to go to such extremes to sustain it. It is tragic that the people of the United States and other countries have been subjected to this kind of betrayal..
