How were families affected by the war?Brief Overview of the Vietnam WarThe Vietnam War began in 1954 and ended in 1975. It was a conflict between the communist regime of North Vietnam and the Viet Cong (its southern allies) against South Vietnam and its main ally, the United States. The war began after Ho Chi Minh and his communist party Viet Minh came to power. More than 3 million people died in this war, including more than 58,000 Americans. By 1969, U.S. involvement in the war had reached its peak, involving more than 500,000 U.S. military personnel. Over time, opposition to the war grew in America. This opposition led to a bitter division between those who supported the war and those who opposed it. By 1975, Vietnamese communist forces had taken control of Saigon, ending the Vietnam War (History.com). Most people view this war as a huge loss and a tragic waste of time.
