Essay / Hobbes' Leviathan: a principality? A Republic? Or...
Machiavelli divides all states into principalities and republics, principalities are ruled by a solitary figure and republics are ruled by a group of people. With Hobbes's Leviathan, a new model of governing a territory was introduced, which can no longer be divided equally between Machiavelli's two categories of state. Hobbes combines the concepts of governance of principalities and republics into a new type of political thought similar to and different from Machiavelli. Hobbes, unlike Machiavelli, is on the side of the people and not the armed prophets. Hobbes believes that the function of society is not only to live, but also to have a safe and comfortable life. He believes that by transferring all rights to a sovereign, the threat of the state of nature will be diminished. A sovereign elected official will be able to represent and protect everyone equally; he is not a leader of the people but a representative. Leviathan differs from principalities and republics by establishing the institution of the Commonwealth through the social contract. To understand how Leviathan differs from principalities or republics, one must examine the principles of each to decipher how Hobbes resembles and disagrees with Machiavelli. The Leviathan State resembles a principality by giving absolute power to a single ruler. All citizens, except Leviathan, cede their rights to the sovereign. It resembles a principality because the ruler's authority is governed by one person. Hobbes believes that “a kingdom divided in itself cannot stand” (Hobbes, 136), therefore the authority of government must not be divided and there can only be one sovereign in control. By granting complete control to the ruler, they... .. middle of paper ...... hold absolute power but are also controlled by the actions of the people as they are seen as servants of the people. Hobbes's political thought is said to be the foundation of parliamentary sovereignty in Canada. He believes that the main goal of societies is to provide a safe and functional life without the constant fear of death. If those in power do not obey the social contract, the Commonwealth has the right to create a new social contract so that the state of nature does not prevail. The sovereign is vested with unlimited power but must always act in a way that protects the people. The sovereign's laws allow the Commonwealth not to constantly fear death. As with principalities, a sovereignty is allowed to rule ultimately. This is like a republic in which the ruler must conform to the will of the people. Hobbes takes both principles and creates Leviathan.
