Exhibition and gallery reviewEarly 20th century Canadian art has a fascinating and intertwined past, which is explored and discovered through the exhibition by guest curator Robert Amos, Harold Mortimer - Lamb: The Art Lover at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria (AGGV). The exhibition explores the life and activities of photographer, writer, painter, patron, promoter and collector Harold Mortimer-Lamb (Amos, Print, 2). He was a man of many facets in Canadian art and this exhibition explores his influence using artwork and writings from the estate of Harold and Vera Mortimer-Lambs, over one hundred and ninety-two pieces given to the AGGV in 1978. Over two hundred and sixty of his photographs have been donated to the British Columbia Archives and Amos includes some of them in the exhibition. The exhibition also borrows from the collection of the Vancouver Art Gallery, the National Gallery of Canada (NGC) and Mortimer-Lamb's daughter, Molly Lamb-Bobak. Since the gift of Mortimer-Lambs' estate, Robert Amos has dedicated himself to researching his story and as a result this exhibition, along with the book of the same name, has traveled the world. The exhibition features Mortimer-Lamb's photographs and paintings and works by the many artists of his life. The exhibition takes a chronological approach to Mortimer-Lamb's life, from his arrival in British Columbia in 1889 from Surrey, England, and his involvement with the British Columbia and Canadian Mining Institute to 'to his final years as a husband and painter. Amos begins with Mortimer-Lamb's first painterly photographs of his daughter Dolly in the early 1900s. These photographs, particularly Dolly, around 1905, helped establish his status as a leading "art photographer" in Canada (Amos, Exhibit Panel, Dolly, circa 1905...... middle of paper ......famous artists By including pieces from outside the Mortimer-Lamb collection, such as the NGC's Vera de Varley, Amos highlights Mortimer-Lamb's importance in Canadian art as he is associated with these iconic images through his balanced and in-depth study of the activities, collection and works of this remarkable man, Amos gives Mortimer-Lamb the. important status it deserves and provides a detailed history of the 20th century Canadian art world.
