Essay / The Tale of Genji by Murasaki Shikibu - 1016
The protagonist of the book – The Tale of Genji, was a factious character named Genji who was certainly a legendary figure. His countless intimate relationships with various women were truly incredible by modern standards. It is easy for readers to notice Genji's loving nature. However, behind this certain image, there were surely other notable traits of him through his affairs with some of the important women in his life. For example, he was courageous and treated the women he loved with sincerity and courtesy; plus, when it came to women, he was something of an unrealistic perfectionist. However, he could sometimes also be selfish for his own sake without taking into consideration the ideas and feelings of others. Genji showed great bravery through his love for the unfortunate dead beauty – Yugao. Their intense love comes so quickly and disappears instantly. Yugao was different from the women that Genji would normally be interested in. However, perhaps simply because of her uniqueness, Genji fell deeply in love with her. Afterwards, he even persuaded Yugao to run away with him. Unfortunately, shortly after their journey began, Yugao tragically died for no reason. Witnessing Yugao's death, he shed heartbreaking tears. To avoid rumors among the public, he could not accompany her before she was buried, even if he really wanted to. It was miserable for him. Genji was probably not a courageous person since he was always careful that secret matters were not revealed to the public; he cared about his reputation. However, after a few struggles, he decided to see her one last time at the risk of getting caught because he loved her with all his heart. Hi... middle of paper ... After possessing the girl, he raised her according to his thoughts and ideas, hoping that one day she would become the perfect woman he was looking for. This may seem unfair to the girl because it deprived Murasaki of freedom and autonomy. However, to achieve his perfectionism, he would do anything, which was selfish but intriguing. To summarize, Genji had many commendable characters based on how he treated his lovers, such as courage and authenticity. However, it was some kind of illness that he was trying to raise a girl to become a perfect lover by stealing someone who didn't belong to him. It was just as selfish as the way he betrayed his father who loved and cared for him unconditionally. Overall, Genji, the protagonist of The Tale of Genji, was truly a fascinating person who had a variety of characters, which made this book really interesting..
