  • Essay / Psychological analysis of Dexter Morgan in...

Antisocial personality disorder does not mean that someone is inherently dangerous or threatening. Initially, I thought Dexter was wrong for killing people, but as I watched the series further, I began to realize that maybe he was helping the greater good. Could bad actions or malicious intentions really not be that bad? I was forced to question my sense of right and wrong. But who is Dexter to determine when other people's lives should end? This representation of psychopathology made me understand that murder is more relative than we think. Even if the object is inherently evil, such as murder, there is not necessarily just one bad outcome. Dexter potentially saved many innocent lives by ending the life of a criminal. This show sheds new light on psychopathology and the adaptation of social norms. Simple murder maintains a stable justice system and the innocence of the ignorant public. We believe that all criminals are prosecuted under the law, but this shows that many escape serious crimes every day. If this was not handled the way Dexter treats these invisible offenders, heinous murders of innocent civilians would take place in our country.
