The final recommendation for an organization choosing a leadership style is to allow employees to provide feedback on what they prefer, which can increase retention rates. There are four main types of leadership behaviors and personalities that will be covered during this presentation. These four types are relationship-oriented versus task-oriented, and emotional intelligence versus cognitive intelligence. The relationship-oriented leader (ROL) likes to know team members very well, including their most emotional traits. The ROL is very helpful to team members and is the type of leader most likely to help the team with tasks when they are overwhelmed. These types of leaders strongly believe that every worker has the drive to achieve their goals and that some may have been damaged by previous leaders to the point that they just need the proper care given to them. ROLs have an open door policy and like to communicate their values. They believe that all team members must be on the same page to operate successfully. ROLs excel at aligning new team members into existing teams. This type of leader is service-oriented, meaning they put the needs of the team ahead of their own and expect team members to want to confide in each other. The moral personality of the ROL makes it easy for team members to trust them (Dubrin, 2010). Leaders' task-related care shifts away from the person and toward the task most of the time. A task-bound leader tends to look down on people who have less strength than others. These types of leaders can quickly assess team members' weaknesses, probably too quickly for a team member to feel they have had an opportunity to speak up, with the intention of demonstrating leadership. Employees with many task weaknesses will receive much more supervision than stronger employees: both types of team members will receive frequent feedback on how they perform tasks.
